Good Morning!
The first thing you need to do is to complete your movie maker identity work. Please make sure you have engaged with some of the theories about identity and that you refer to them in your piece.
When you have finished that, have a read of the following articles, both of which deal with how young women are represented (or representing themselves) in the media.
One is on the problem with 'Lads' Mags', the extent to which they objectify women and what certain groups would like to change. Do tell me what you think by posting a comment.

The other is on the issue of the sexualisation of women in the music industry. This has been in the news a lot recently, following some of Miley Cyrus' performances in her music videos and on stage. Many involved in the music industry have added their voices to the debate. Read the article and let me know what you think

What issues are raised by certain representations of women in the media? To what extent do you think it has an impact on the identity of women (young and old) today and to what extent does it have an impact on how males view female identity? Just some food for thought.
Enjoy.
Nina
There are certain representations of women in the media, most of which are women who feel the need to wear hardly any clothes and be seen as sex symbols such as Miley Cyrus. It makes younger girls feel as if they need to be like these celebrities and act like them. I believe to an extent that males feel as if most girls/women should be like this because all they constantly see is music videos and pictures of women dressed provocatively.
ReplyDeleteIn this day, the media is presenting women in a sexual, objectified way. Which is think is actually having a dangerous effect on females, as they will grow up thinking that they need to present their selves in a sexual way, to have 'worth' and also todays youth become de-sesitised to explict sexual behavior and de-assosiate it with love.
ReplyDeleteAnother issue is the whole idea of 'its okay to rape a women, if she was 'underdressed' which I think is NOT okay and people should be able to wear what they are comfortable in, and its the men who are responsible. But then this links back to the some of the effects the media are creating, with they women are being portrayed in the media.
Even though I really dislike the generalisation of women based on lads mags and other media forms I feel that at this moment in time this issue doesn't effect me as much as it is made out to be affecting every single female. I think that the blaim shouldn't be given to the lads mags and how they "portray all women" but should be given to men in general and how they decide to percieve the message given by the lads mags etc. Men are always going to have the urge to look at naked women and good looking women but taking away their source of images is not going to automatically take away their new opinion of females. The media I feel did not intend to send a subliminal message that women are sex objects that is just how men have seen in.
ReplyDeleteLad mags, music videos and other types of media are exploiting women to be seen as sex symbols, many issues has been raised up about this on-going fact like sexism and offensive to other women, however this really doesn't affect me in any way because these women are choosing to be shown in this type of way and the men are choosing to buy the magazines or to watch the videos etc.. Therefore this issue does't affect me personally. However i can see how it may make women feel uncomfortable about their bodies and how the lad mags portray women as a certain stereotype, in my opinion these magazines or type of media aren't meant to be seen by women therefore shouldn't be taken offensively. Even though this is giving men an idea of what the ideal women should look like, taking away this type of media isn't going to change peoples opinions.
ReplyDeletePeople like Miley Cyrus are the worst type of symbol for young girls to be looking up to because she has made it seem okay to wear hardly any clothes and to act like a sex object in her music videos also she has chosen to dress the way she does. Furthermore she isn't the best icon however she has chosen this route therefore she has to suffer the consequences for putting herself in this position.
